the new french sound

Post by peeddrroo » Sat Jun 10, 2006 10:18 am

there are a few french labels and artists that are becoming big here.
kind of the heirs of daft punk and mr oizo.
artists such as justice, paraone, sebastian, surkin....

you can ceck their sound here:
http://www.myspace.com/etjusticepourtous (justice)
http://www.myspace.com/0sebastian0 (sebastian)
http://www.myspace.com/paraone (paraone)
http://www.myspace.com/surkin (surkin)

their labels are ed banger records (which incindently is my label also... ) and institubes

have some of you already heard these names/music? how do you like it?

i'm just trying to feel how this is perceived from abroad.

there's been great stuff coming out of france for quite a while, the dub/electro scene there is perhaps the best in the world at the moment.

well, some good stuf in there but what to you makes it specifically french?
to me it sounds like typical 2000's music:

rawness/minimalism:
this is very typical of almost ALL music made since 2000!!! ;) From Sean Paul to Peaches through the White Stripes, everyone is after a "raw" sound. (and im not even getting into all that neo-folk or minimal techno)
if you ask me, these raw 80's style grooves with 3 seconds of silence in between each drum hit are getting a bit boring... ;)

playfulness:
thats one thing i love of french music, its always very playful. Thats actually the aspect i liked the most from the music u posted here...

it's a nice break from all the serious minimal bizness (which I like as well)

This is great stuff. Sounds very similiar to what I'm producing now. I wanna buy it and play it. Where can I?

I've been into the french sound for a while - certainly the DJs - I used to be permenantly locked on radiofg online when I lived in the UK, but now the times arre all screwy and they dont have a listen again that i can find (still!)

but garnier/f-comm are the obvious ones, plus duriez, fafa monteco, antoine clamaran, dj fex, d'julz - all of them great (plus Duriez charted one of my tunes at number 4 for one week! )

as vinyls, you can get them in most online shops, but here's the "official" one: www.arcademode.com
as downloads, you'll find most of the stuff on bleep.com

i agree that this music is not *especially* french. though, they are presented as the "new daft punks" here.

@SW: i didn't put my name in the list, cos i'm not doing the same stuff, i'm more into hiphop than the other guys, who have more rock influences.

i think whatever style you're into, they all are good producers, and there's always some elements in their tracks which are interesting/inspiring. so it's worth checking.
and no, i don't think they use trackers. what did you mean exactly?

This sounds .. like .. awesome. Sounds like some of the crap I've been toying with lately.

Is it mind-numbing, constant-tempo, 4/4, kick-every-beat drivel?

If not, I may even have a listen!

Wow I'm back in the 80s but this time it's even more cheezy.
