You can use
MIDI Yoke to route MIDI out from Live back into Live and control the crossfader using a MIDI clip.
1) Install MIDI Yoke.
2) In Live's Preferences, enable Track for the MIDI Yoke Output channel you want to use. Also, enable Remote for the Input channel you want to use.
3) Create MIDI clip with envelope on the CC # you want to use. Route the output of this channel to the MIDI Yoke channel you setup in Preferences. 4) While this clip is playing, go into MIDI mapping mode and select the crossfader so that the CC # you used in step 3 is now assigned tp the crossfader.
That should do it.

yes, i believe it was hambone1 who recently posted a pic of his setup, with a whole array of midi clips for pre-programmed x-fades of various lengths.

Can't you just automate the crossfader the usual way on the master channel?
I'm pretty sure I've done that - or have I just dreamt it?

That's basically what I did, but on a Mac with the IAC driver.
I made 4, 8, 16, 32, 64 and 128 beat linear crossfades left and right, and A, B and A=B that are triggered by BCR buttons. And you don't have to make them linear if you prefer another curve.
I also assigned a BCR knob to crossfade, too, for manual control. The LEDs around the BCR knob move with the automation for visual feedback.
Super-smooth crossfades and cuts without the monkey work of doing it manually. I've got better things to do!

on osx I use midiO.component it was created so you could send midi in garageband but it works nicely for this trick. I don't like using iac driver cause for some reason it screws up my automation when in arrangement view.
