Hi,

This may have been hashed out before, but I am hoping I can get some direct help in finding a drum sampler/ drum loops to get me bouncing in Live. A lot of you have direct experience with these programs, I appreciate any help offered.

List of important elements in deciding are:
1) Low CPU usage (very important!)
2) "Real" drum sounds (I like experimental but acoustic is more important)
3) Ease of learning (I'm very new to Live and computer music making)
3) Ease of integration with Live
4) A cool randomizing factor

So far, the contestants are:
Drumcore (rewired into Live- how well does that work? easy?)
Microtonic (are there nice basic drums in there?)
RMIV (CPU drain?)
Battery 2
Stylus RMX (less inclined couse it sounds too processed)

If I had a lot of time and energy, I would try all the downloads, but I would surely rather gain more insight from experienced users out there. Thanks for any and all input. PAX

Microtonic is a full on drum synth, and thus really doesnt contain many "real" drum sounds per-say, although it is capable of making all sorts of sounds, so give it a try. CPU useage is EXTREMELY LOW, less than 6% on my macbook while using all 8 synth parts.

If you want a really good and smooth drum sampler, RM IV is pretty light on CPU and has simple features to get you on your way.

If its just drum sounds youre after, I have a boatload of em and I rekkon I could share some with you.

Drumcore sounds like your kinda bag. I have been using it successfully for awhile now.

The "key" is to use the loops. If you want details, I'll give them, since there is no real buzz out there.

I've used RMIV a fair bit and I'm quite happy with it. Modest on CPU, lots of sounds in different genres, very stable. Microtonic is probably better for synthetic sounds though. Don't know the others.

Thanks for the post. Nice to hear some of these machines don't drain the CPU.

Thanks for the post. If you've been using Drumcore and don't mind sharing some tips, that would be great. Since it's not a plug-in, doesn't it make it more difficult to use with live? Can't get a demo on this one, so there's only taking the word from those that are using it.

I was thinking it might be cool to have a program like this for the clean straight beats, maybe mangling it up with phatmatik when the mood strikes...Can this be used in conjunction with beat reapeat and warping? I should really keep it simple and start with Abe's tools.

If it's real drum sounds you are after, don't overlook fxpansion's BFD.

My vote is for RMiv. good for 'real' drums, can do synth drums if you want to (but i use microtonic - it's just so fun to use)

Ok, so the "real" drums I was looking for took the back seat. I downloaded RMIV and Microtonic and the decision was made pretty quickly- Magnus Lidstrom is one amazing creator. Makes me want to try the Malstrom synth, though I've never been interested in the Reason interface.

After tweaking a few patches, I realized that creating synthesized drums was going to be way more fun and interesting than tweaking samples, and the Microtonic is WONDERFULLY LIGHT ON CPU!!! Anybody out there wanting a lght impact drum machine must check it out. A very simple and inspiring plug-in with a whole lot of depth. Fun, fun, fun...Dig It!
