this is one of the most powerful documentaries i have ever seen. the KKK are still alive and well, but people are generally so sick of hearing about it that they slip under the radar. they should really show this documentary in schools, it's unbelievable. i'm pretty used to watching documentaries on depressing subjects, but i cried for the whole second half of this one. sooo wrong... the mind boggles.

Ku Klux Klan: A Secret History

A part of American history for over a century, the Ku Klux Klan is a testament to the hostilities that surround the heterogeneity of the American nation. Waxing and waning in popularity over the decades, the Klan is the proverbial phoenix, rising from the ashes to gain membership and popularity when it seems to be extinguished. This History Channel documentary chronicles the history of the Klan, from its inception as a political organization trying to cope with the realities of emancipation and the defeat of the South in the Civil War to the modern-day Klan, which continues its legacy of hate and violence under the banner of Americanism and Christianity. Ku Klux Klan: A Secret History would be useful for classes on American History, African-American History, Political Science, Civics and Ethics. It is appropriate for middle school and high school.

Note to Educators Ku Klux Klan: A Secret History contains some graphic images and language that might be inappropriate for younger viewers.

No matter how right or wrong you think the KKK is they have evey right to exist, teach and preach what they believe - as long as no one physically gets hurt

the KKK is as American as you can get - the right to free speech

I of course do not agree with anything the KKK stands for and if they all had their testicles removed, baked and feed to their little hate mongering children in their Cheerio's I wouldn't bat an eye. If all the KKK wives ended up with a flesh eating desease that literally melted their vaginal lips and walls like acid I wouldn't lose any sleep

but

You really can't call this a free country if they are not allowed to exist

"as long as nobody gets hurt"

people get hurt man.

and their corruption of american politics is epic... that cannibal governor of indiana guy was insanity! suuuuuch power, dear god.

i believe in free speech as well, but i think that there are other ways to approach a problem like this.

Of course people get hurt but the fundamental idea that they are allowed to say what's on their mind is my point - acts of violence and words are seperate in my eyes

sure words can insight a riot but it's the people rioting not the words

No you can't yell fire in a crowded theatre or tell your pilot you've got a bomb - the governments made those laws

but there's no law stating you can't say you hate someone and feel like they belong in hell

once you start to influence people to carry out your plan, you then cross the line into hurting people, weither it is out right violence, or economic and social oppresion.

I started watching this from the middle last night until I got into warping a track, pretty f-ed up stuff.

Like Mike Holiday points out, it's about influence. The head of the KKK was able to become elected governor of Indiana and pretty much ran the state into the ground until the KKK imploded on itself after the governor got a youg girl drunk, raped her, kidnapped her onto a train, ATE HER FLESH and then left her for dead. She lived a few days longer to report her story. Even after he was caught he laughed at the notion of being convicted.

They gained control through fear and the bible, sound familiar?

They're allowed to voice their views but I will shout mine louder, in their face, every chance I get.

D.C. Stevenson (former Grand Dragon)'s mansion is in the same neighborhood i live in.

i can walk there, and also walk to the house where the woman he killed lived and died. (and the conviction of that murder eventually led to his demise, and the demise of the KKK's political hold over Indiana)

Its pretty eerie.
just rode my bike by there the other day.

most def creepy - very creepy

I'm creeped out

I think it's the woman I call my "Old Lady" who's a public defender works the DV court in Pierce County

everyone is entitled to their day in court no matter how you feel about who they are, what they did or what they stand for

Still, that's creepy - Now I know why I didn't put Indiana on my "To go" places for '06

nevermind....I wikipedia'd him.

Stephenson is credited with the quote, “Everything is fine in politics as long as you don't get caught in bed with a live man, or a dead woman.”

crazy shit man.

i didn't know that there was a silent film glorifying the klan and that it played a big part in the klan's resurgence in the 20's. pretty fucked up. And the happy dixieland music about how great the klan is. remix that, if you wanna offend everyone or scare the shit out of tripping people.
