I wonder what's the benefit of having two Live licenses so that you can have Live running on two computers at the same time. Does anybody use Live in a setup where two computers are necessary?

why would you want to? maybe 2 people playing live against each other or something

studio tower = more power
and
laptop to perform = more portable

Disregard this if you want, but Live's license permits use on two computers.

how about:
Using them as decks with a mixer inbetween, loading a track on one machine while playing the other - I think a few people do that. It would help get around the dreaded "mega-session" issue

I have a tower and an iBook and I'm running Live on both of them. But not at the same time. And that is not only, because the license doesn't allow it, but simply because I can't come up with any idea why I would want to have live running on two computers at the same time. That's why I ask. I'm trying to find out if I'm missing something.

Maybe something like a jam-session?

A jam session is the only reason I can think of why you might wanna do this.

Unless you've got a shite computer, which by the sounds of things you haven't.

ja. jamming session with a friend or two.. or like machinate said, possibly use them as decks but its kinda an expensive way of doing it

one for sequencing and one to run operator in demo mode?

record the audio from the demo mode copy back to the sequencing copy.

that way you can use operator for free and still be able to save your live set.

you can even tweak the operator settings by recoding controller moves on the non demo copy.

correct me if i'm wrong but i think this is within the terms of the license!

yes, provided you actually own two copies of Ableton Live...

but one copy would only ever run in demo mode, it doesn't even need to be unlocked. no need to save it.

How about in a situation where you have multiple instrument setups that you are sampling and looping? You could have two Live stations, one on either side of the room, say, one near your drums and percussion and one near your guitar/key setup.

Or, if you are using a DJ mixer that has filters instead of EQ's or effects hardware you wanted to run like half you session through, say you want everything in one track to get washed out by a huge reverb or tape delay...

Maybe you want to run some clips in Live through some guitar effects?

Shouldn´t it be possible to feed the Operator demo via midi from the other computer running Live? So you surely could save all settings without offending the license?

I don't like that question, because that way you're shouting at Ableton "You stupid guys have invested your time in making your software better instead of closing possible holes and now I've found one!"

The possible reaction is quite obvious and exactly the opposite of what most of us would want. I prefer better software

Jamming really sounds like a fun idea. Is is possible to synchronize the two computers so that both would start clips at the some time with global quantization?
