$420 US for "full" upgrade?

Am I figuring this out correctly? As a registered Live 5 user, if I want to upgrade to Live 6 and get Sampler and the EIC, I will need to get the boxed version (for the EIC) at $219 and then $199 for Sampler? That seems a bit harsh, no?

Well, if you film them giving it to you up the ass you can warp the movie in Live and send it back to them.

Corporate Mentality on Abletons part. They seem to have changed their ethos somewhat. I agree it,s harsh

I don't really want Sampler or the EIC, but I do want the box and the hardcopy manual.

I guess they will sell me a manual on its own at some point, that's the main thing for me. It's handy to have around.

(lol, sell blood now)

yeh, I see what you're saying, but I don't know enough about the benefits of the sampler to adjudge it's benefit to me, so I don't know that to say 'full upgrade' unless you think you'll really use the sampler is the best way to look at it. Put it this way, i'm glad they didn't include it by default and make the upgrade price $350.

I really don't agree with this. The Sampler is an entirely new product. Steinberg doesn't give Virtual Guitarist to every Cubase user either, do they? In order to get Live 6 with the new features, you have to get the upgrade, which is 99 euros. The samples won't be available for the download upgrade, probably due to bandwidth restrictions.

why do they have to charge extra? Its shite, most sequencers come with a FREE synth & sampler 8O

Hi

i think that price is for an initial purchase of live as it don't say upgrade next to live 5 price.

theres a number of points to be made here,
Firstly I think it's fair to expect payment for a separate product, but that's where Ableton falls foul - note you example "Virtual Guitarist" IS a separate product - it's a VST and can be run in any VST2.0 compatible host.
Lives devices are not comparable . Lives devices cannot be used in another host.

Secondly the Live upgrade is €179 boxed, if you get the downloaded upgrade to Live (without the sample library) it is 99€ . So if you got the downloaded Live upgrade and the downloaded version of Sampler - you would have a sampler without sounds.

So the answer is really YES, you probably do need to get the Boxed €179 version if you want to get the Sampler.

Not that I am bothered myself (I'll just get the 99€ upgrade if anything), but I think Ableton need to address this issue of comparing Live devices to "portable" instruments such as Kontakt or Virtual Guitarist

You're right that Live's devices cannot run anywhere else, of course, but I don't think that changes the fact that they're upgrades that add extra functionality to the host which you can't expect to be there to begin with. Sampler is a competitor to Kontakt et al that's tailored for Live users, not a feature of Live.

As a side-note, I hope that Ableton opens up the plug-in/instrument format so that talented people like yourself can make add-ons for Live without having to rely on platform specific frameworks :)

Yes, well, some people find a sampler without sounds very useful. And it does import most of the available sample libraries out there, including a plethora of free (and usable) SoundFonts available on the web.

Yes, this upgrade makes my life more difficult because I had sort of determined to buy Logic. However, with the advent of Sampler, and EIS or whatever it makes it more difficult a decision. Do I still get Logic, now knowing that I can actually rewire LIVE as slave WITH instruments? Or just stick with Ableton which I know pretty well already.

Just more :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?:

Plus, US$419 for the total upgrade with sampler and EIS is pricey.

Just more :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?:

and no

well I've been sleeping through all the ruckus!

But as Paws has been pointing out - Sampler is more of a competitor to Knotakt (for live users) and it can import alot of sample formats - I have Kontakt because I have Komplete 2 and let me tell you Sampler eats it alive - the resynthesis in particular is amazing - it makes it not so much a sampler as an FM synth that uses multi-samples as the modulator

really, you cant expect them to provide such a beast for free - or if you could it would bump the upgrade price up wchich would annoy all the people who dont want it

as for the upgrade - it's a fair price really, 99 is par for the course and there will be a bunch of stuff in the library well worth the 80E extra - and considering the Group device stuff - which incidentally is all exchangeable via the net - I think we will see some kind of library develop along the lines of reaktor - it really is like the combinator but about a million times better

I purchased Kontakt for a pile of money just 6 months ago.

If you add in the extra cost of the boxed version to get the instrument library, getting Sampler is close around $300... that is another pile of cash to pay for something that duplicates what I already have.

Maybe Ableton can offer a crossgrade price to entice people like me.
