Amaury from technical support here. We are already in contact there, but I'll answer to that one here, as it may interest other people too.

You see no MIDI/sync tab right? but you do see a MIDI tab ? The syncronization feature may not be available in the lite version you have, but the misunderstanding comes from the fact that you don't need sync to record MIDI into Live, all you need is to sset the right MIDI port to receive MIDI data from your keyboard or external machines, and that can be done in the MIDI tab, the one you see in your Preferences.

Sync is only used to syncronize two clocks, i.e. 2 computers or a hardware machine to a computer.

That is kind of what I though was happening. Yet the mystery still remains unanswered.

Can you explain then the distinction between the RIGHT midi port from

1) the correct midi port( and how do I know which is the correct midi port) for to record in audio has been a breeze, yet "to sset the right MIDI port to receive MIDI data" remains unexplained. I have to remind you , that you have been working with this product, I asume for years. I just bought this and everything is new ... so to say what to do and to not go on to say how to do it is just a bit vague. I have admitted my learning curve is a bit slow, and I do not mean to unleash my frustration on you, but perhaps if something - some aspect- some devise-- some tab- in the tutorials says what to do--- and that function is not there at all--all I can say is that i am disheartened, and at this point still confused. Because after all this time 30-40 hours, you think that I have not tried eveything that is obvious to do.. is .........no words. Maybe it is all me........??

You mentionned following the tutorial right? And the problem was that you could not see the MIDI/sync tab? So, just use the MIDI tab instead of MIDI/sync, the rest of the instructions should fit.

The right MIDI port, is the MIDI port to which you've attached your keyboard or external machine. i.e. if you have a FastTrack Pro, you should see "FastTrack Pro MIDI in" or something like that in the MIDI preferences.

Thank you so much for your patience. I have been trying to do just that for weeks, perhaps it is external to Ableton. The eMac has an Audio?Midi setup page, whereI configured what I perceive to be the correct hook-up of midi gear.Fast TRack Pro to Akai to A90ex back to Fast Track Pro. Or the midi cables themselves between units.
I will try not to bother you again, with any more innane basic simple set up procedures but answer one last question.

Where is the internal sync tab? And why is this tab a necessary componet to record midi.

Probably, the fast track pro is already enabled in the Preferences, but check it: open Preferences, click the MIDI tab, and enable "Track" for the FastTrack Pro MIDI input and output.

Than in Live, create MIDI track, arm them (the little button with a circle in, close to the activity indicators/volume faders), and you should see MIDI data coming in if you play MIDI from outside.
