I don't know format 1 from 2 or whatever, they should work fine, just try it. Impulse doesn't do general MIDI drum mapping so you'll have to sort those out. Just try to drag and drop the folder into a project.

I did and it works only the right sounds to choose if you wasnt to hear the original midifile if you use the nativ einstruments in AL
Format 1 means all tracks are separated and if you drag a format o midifile than all notes are on one channel ( so this format is useless in Albleton)
I can use hypercancas or bandstand as VSTi for replaying the midifile
Should be clearer if there was a "midi import" on the menu of Ableton
There is enough midimaterial to use in a song as a idea for composing
Ooh .. how to assign the right sounds of hypercancas to the miditracks ?

I suppose Ableton forgot that side of midi development. Check Reaper (
http://www.reaper.fm ) if you want better midi support, like having in a single midi clip/item also note events on multiple different midi channels, also assigning those different channels/clips/items fastly to a certain vsti by simply putting them into the same folder, all things which are a problem in Live imo because nobody wants to click around each time extensively just for stupid midi routing. You can also use Reaper and Live together via Rewire which are imo the two best hosts currently.

I use midi files all the time in Live. If you import it in Arrangement view, you'll get the midi controllers (Like tempo automation).
If you want to use Session view, you will lose the tempo automation. I substitute this in creating dummy clips to control the tempo. Lots of work, but very interesing results.
Hope this helps
