Need tips and tricks RIGHT HERE: recording advice

I'm still learning the finer points of Live, Running live 5 and using a diaphragm condenser mic to record acoustic guitar and vocals. I have all the effects and about a million plugins, but of course I don't know how to use anything.
Here's a sample recording (which is not that strong but whatever) and you can here the static and background noise at a low volume, also the vocals are kind of metalic and very thin.
Plays in the browser: http://www.soundclick.com/util/getplaye ... 22600&q=hi
What I'd like is to clean up that static out of the background, thicken up the sound, and get some nice clean tone instead of that cave sound I've got going on.
My effects chain: EQ 3 -> Resonator -> Compressor
I have a vague idea of how to use eq and the compressor, but the res I just fiddle with the knobs but I don't know how it works. What else do I need to know to unlock the tone? Any plugins or settings or values I need to pay attention to.
Fill me with knowledge! Thanks for the help.
