Hiya,

Tonight, I think I finally began to understand what an Envelope Follower is, and I'm trying to figure out how it could be used creatively...

Anybody feel like sharing some insight?

At the moment, I'm only trying to use the Envelope Follower that's in the Auto-Filter that came with Live, but other uses and plugs are certainly welcome for discussion.

P.S. Just to be clear... the Envelope Follower in Auto-Filter "reads" the audio signal amplitude, and uses this as a control signal for the Filter Cutoff Freq, correct? So basically, when the sound gets quiter, the filter closes, and when it get's louder, the filter opens? I'm thinking of a LP filter now, but I imagine some interesting things can be done with other types of filters.

i use plogue bidule to make all kinds of fun stuff. anyways, it has an envelope follower that can be routed to anything you want. seriously anything, pan, delay amount, rate, feedback, distortion, any control of any vst or audiounit on your computer, anything. fun stuff.

Yeah, I have heard a lot about Plogue. I'm still trying to get my head around Reaktor!

Lastnight I came across some suggestions about using an env follower on a filter to create auto-wah fx. If you use an audio loop with a 4/4 kick drum it sounds like the filter is on an LFO.

Also tried using some speaking vocal samples, and it sounded like a Filter/Wah but a bit more randomized.

I'm interested in using an env foll to modulate other parameters such as pan, delay, feedback and so on, like you mention. But I'm wondering what some common uses of
env foll might be in composition.

How do you use the in a composition, ejectorset?

plug in your bass guitar, adjust the envelope parameters and play that funky bootsy like bass
