mac iac driver problem - different hardware setups

i am setting up a live show that uses ableton live and need to know some things about using different devices and midi controller maping.

at the moment i am using a very basic version of the rig (powerbook g4 (10.4.6), m-audio 410, roland vsynth and akai mpc 4000) this is just while it is put together and will be run with much more equipment...

all was well until i turned on the iac midi driver and even that worked on the song that i needed it in, but now a previous songs midi controller mappings don't work properly. although still showing the same mapping, the controller is still giving out the same messages and the midi controller indicator shows it is receiving it doesn't function. in this particular instance it is a track on/off switch and it will not turn back on, except if i turn the iac driver off as a midi input...
i'm sure i can work around it, but i need to know that if i plug a new keyboard/mpc/midi controller in, either via usb or thorugh an existing midi port (unitor 8 for example) that my mappings are not going to change. Is the midi controller mapping STRICTLY chan/controller or if your midi devices appear in a different order do things change ?
thanks in advance for your help
