My live set @ Boom Festival - video with live screen caps

Helllllllloooo

Earlier this month I had the honour of playing at Boom Festival, which has been pretty much my dream ever since I was into psychedelic trance.

I got some good footage of the party and of my set (altho its a bit dark, and some places ive had to level the hell out of the video so its a bit dodge but still good).

My set went well! I kicked off one of the nights starting at 9:30pm with about 30 people on the dancefloor. By the end of my set the floor was packed shoulder to shoulder, and I was told the capacity is about 10 to 11,000 people so its the biggest and most responsive crowd I've played too.

I think my music was quite different to the general style there, which I blame on living on a small island/country away from the rest of the scene hehe.

I turned up at the airport (airfaires were paid well before hand), got picked up striaght away, driven in an air conditioned car to the festival where I had a tent with bed and sleeping gear set up for me. The tent even had a huge peice of canvas over it to stop the sun hitting it so I could sleep during the day!

The fed me and kept me drunk (for 9 days) and just absolutley made me feel wounderful. The artists even had thier own private beach/lake! floating around all day on lilos talking audio production with the best trance/progressive artists in the world!! YEAAHAR.

This is the perfect festival in my opinion. Everything was thought out and went without a hitch, ill be back in 2008 regardless if I play or not. The only thing that made me go WTF was the amount of fake live acts, but all thier tunes were awsome so I didn't care and danced my ass off anyway.

Anyway, the video is below. Its general festival stuff until about half way through when it kicks into my set. Theres a bit of techy stuff to gawk at, including some screen captures of my ableton setup, and some busy tech work on the Pad Kontrol, so hang in there :p

If your keen on a high quality version of the set, I have made some nice CD's which I am selling for 10€ each, including postage to anywhere in the world. Just flick me an email

Absolutely fantastic & inspiring! Makes me wish I was 20 years younger...

IMO, that's what Live is all about... playing live!

Nice video. Nice location. And I bet you had a very nice time.

What do you mean by fake live acts though?
The kind of acts who bring all their gear and just play from a minidisc?
Or Dj's who call themselves Live acts?

Over here we don't get that anymore. This country is very small and word spreads quick. If somebody pulls that around here, they just simply wont get booked anymore.

Anyway. Nice stuff. Your music is indeed different. It's not exactly techno or psytrance, but yet it's both :D

I'll try to catch the other new-zealander in London
Let us know when you drop by europe.

hambone1 - Thanks dude! 20 years younger? don't pull that one on me there were guys nearly three times my age performing at this festival! hehe

hoffman2k - Cheers for the comments, it was definantly a highlight in my life!

By fake live I mean dudes who are advertised as live, turning up and playing a stereo channel in cubase/live etc and dancing around like they are doing stuff. I was very excited to see what other live performers get up to as there were many acts advertised as "live", upon lurking about and keeping watch I was very dissapointed. The music was great! the show was not.

It pees me off because I spent HOURS and HOURS pefecting my live performance, only to find that others weren't making any effort. It also means if my set doesn't sound like perfectly sequenced tunes mastered to perfection and mix together without a hitch, I am always goign to sound second best!

Don't get me wrong, there were some guys doing stuff... even tweaking a cutoff or playing a melody along with a backing track gets my thumbs up, but when you dance around and blatently lie about what your doing... grrrrr.

Thats what I mean by fake!

I'm so amazed at that breakdown at the end, where you were just going off on the padkontrol. Very cool.

slipmip - thanks! yeah, I got the pad kontrol about a week before I played and I create some pretty gnarley techniques in one week, I cant wait to get more in depth into it. At the moment i just use it for sample triggering and muting channels but I use it really fast and chop all my synth lines up into tiny loops so I can do some mad reedits on the fly! its such an awsome peice of gear. I am going to buy another one and use two I think.

methyl - Cheers, you can download the whole track feral frameshift from my website www.cosm.co.nz and I absolutley adored your country. I only got to spend 4 days looking around after the festival, but I had an amazing time. I had no money either so me and hannah walked around lisbon and find all kinds of amazing things to look at / do. I love how everyone was so friendly!

rtopia - Thankyou, I am going to video most of my performances from now on and try and get real technical with them so people can see what I am up to.. ill keep posting them on here.

Patch - YEaaah bro, its gotta be fun right!? I've almost got my "canvas" perfectly how I want it so i can just rock out and not stress about anything. suuuuch a good feeling.

Thanks everyone

Great Vid and Music and Performance A+

Thanks for sharing!

Alot of the synth work sounded like the Monomachine SidChip but whatever it was it sounded very organic and smooth.

Hey COSM,

congrats, this is awesome!
Seems like everything was perfect at this fesival (Hehe, I'm jealous of the weather you had. At SonneMondSterne festival in Germany this year the weather was really shitty!)

I also liked your video! Great stuff!
Which video-software do you use?
(Or is it already live6?)
