Dropping a MIDI sequence into Live?

Post by PhilMul » Thu Sep 07, 2006 8:13 pm

First, I am a newbie here.. so please take pity on my stupid questions? Here goes: When I drop in a MIDI file into Live it places the different MIDI tracks on different Live tracks... this is very good. However, no instrument is assigned to the track. My question is: is there a plugin that will do General MIDI and if so, how can I assign this plugin to all of the tracks just created? :?:

Hi,

IIRC General MIDI sequences include a Program Change message at the beginning of each track that sets the instrument. In Live, I'd drop a GM-compatible instrument onto a seperate MIDI track then route all the MIDI file tracks to it, but on different channels.

Roland have various Sound Canvas VSTi's that do GM. In the absence of that, if you're on a PC, you should have a MIDI output called Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth. I'm not sure what output it'll come out of or whether it'll have massive latency but it might do the trick.

Thanks for the info. This would probably work for me, but I am using a Fireface 800 with Live and whenever live is running, Live seem sto shutdown the Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth. The result is I get no sound at all. I don't know whose fualt this is (probably mine of course)? I will call Synthax on Monday to see if I have things configured properly.
