What's the best way (if any) to use an external wah pedal over a sample...or any external effects on Live audio? I'm working with a Firewire Solo by M Audio.

Hmm....a sincere answer I can appreciate...and I'm thankful...but I was looking for a more technical answer...

"How do you set up and effects loop with Live?" probably would have been a more appropriate question.

wouldn't you just use track routing to send the audio out through your soundcard into the wah very quarterinch, then back via quarterinch to soundcard routed to another audio track to record effect? (i can't see why you'd want this on a send, because you have to manipulate it in real time, unless you've got some sort of wah SW, in which case just insert.)

in the preferences-> audio menu make sure the inputs and outputs on the sound card are enabled.

make 2 audio tracks
send audio out track 1 to soundcard output 1/2
connect 1/2 output of the card to the wah input
wah output goes to card input 1/2
set the input of track 2 to sound card input 1/2

Set monitor on track 1 to auto, for track 2 set it to on

Read chapter 12 of the manual, experiment a bit.

Thanks for the kind words, it's more than I deserve, I can rant on a bad day. It helps me to learn this stuff by explaining it, how well do I really know it?


BTW Leadville is beautiful, I went to school at CU, I camped up at Turquoise Lake once, amazing. I randomly followed the signs to the lake one night, I was just driving around the rockies listening to the Pixes in between days seeing the World Mt Bike Chps at Vail. I put down a sleeping bag, made a fire, all at night. I had no idea where I was, it was National Park land, so I camped. When I woke up I saw the lake, it really is turquoise, then a mustang car club paraded by for a while. Good times, I miss the camping out there.

yeah, i love LV and the surrounding mountains, lakes, spend much time camping out. but SF has got some great wilderness nearby, any time i'm in town i MTB out in marin, surf at stimson or ocean, etc.

Also check out track delay. Try setting the track putting out audio to your total latency times -1.5. For example, if yr round trip latency is 20 ms, set yr track delay to -20 or -30 ms (I think). I'm away from my rig right now, so I hope that's right.

This will keep the track you're mangling in sync with everything else.

Better yet, set up the output channel on a send & you can route anything you want to it. This is better for live performance.
