Long time Logiu user , finally diving into live after owning it for a few years.
Trying to wrap my head around sessions, especially when creating downtempo
Thought it would be useful if one of you had a session you wouldn't mind letting me use to tinker with , to get a feel for producing in a new environment.

I can only post a screen shot, but here's a downtempo breaks tune I did in Live:

The track is "Sworl", here's a link if you want to listen and match up what you see, with what you hear:

Thanx for the peek, nice track.
For me I'd really like to see a few sounds getting mangled Aphex Twin/Squarepusher style. A small song with only a few tracks would be fine, but I would like to see an actual file (in Live) or video to see how the process is done. When I chop the hell out of sounds and effect them, it doesn't really sound like art...... it sounds like someone chopped up a bunch of sounds and put FX on em. I wanna SEE some beautiful flows.

There's nothing to see though, good edits LOOK just like bad ones. It's just practice at knowing what sounds good, and when to stop tweaking things. Check out the Future Music magazine with the "Hybrid in the Studio: DVD. they show some close ups of this stuff and sample mangling.

Maybe I'm asking for the wrong thing, maybe it's not edits, I want to learn that 'altered' sound manipulation. For instance, This guy is a poster here, but I don't see him here often, he said he did his entire album in Live and the 4th song on his myspace page
http://www.myspace.com/distraub
is the type of stuff I would love to learn how to do, especially those 'Rubber Jonny' type of vocal edits/effects.... How is that stuff done?

I'm not requesting anyone post thier real work files, maybe just some example files.

those rubber johnny vocal stutters can be made by scrubbing a vocal sample manually and recording. well.. along with some other clever edits. like chopping the waveform manually can achieve this.

Rubber Johnny Video for the curious....

Is there a way for me to do that scrub and record in just live or would Ihave to scrub in live and reroute the signal into another app like soundforge and then import back into Live?

no man. you can do it within live. just go to the session view. make sure you have the i/o section showing. then under 'audio from' select the channel that you have the audio you want to scrub. hit record and record your performance. i record performances to audio just like this about 5 or so times every track i make. super useful.

You are the fucking man!!

OK, one more question... I'm using the global quantinization to change the scrub stepping value and jumping from 1/16, 1/32 and 'none'.... I linked one off my controllers to the global quant. but I cant change the resolution in real time and hear the change, I have to let go of the mouse button and repress to hear the changed resolution. am I doing it wrong. (I put the pointer above the clip sample to get the little speaker and hold down the mouse and move to 'scrub') (I've never used the scrub feature before today... I've clicked in the arrangement view to hear a particular point of the song, but I never even thought to lower the resolution and drag). I've been using Live an a very basic (standard multitrack) way for years, I'm just starting to mess with session view.

Sorry I am a bit late to this thread, but... for those voice cutting "rubber johnny" effects. I used simpler. just load in your sample... and scrub, play with loop length, loop start point, and have fun...

sorry, couldn't resist.
I think they mean playing a loop, and dragging around the start and loop points of the clip.
you can also do the same and automate it using simpler.
If you want a better (in my opinion) way of messing around in loops, check out my rack and tips in this post:

Hope that helps more than my last reply.
