alesis usb mixer

hi,
my friend just bought a alesis usb mixer, installed live lite 4 m-audio edition into a mac g3 ibook 800mghz, appx. 300+ meg ram. there is a high pitched whine sound. played with the latency settings. then i plugged his board into my pb g4 and the noise was there, but much more subdued. anyone want to take a shot at this?? tried a different usb cable........ rand
