i use the Audio-Technica ATH-M30. used to use Sony MDR-V700 until they frigin' snapped on that little swivel point thingie(the AT are older and lasted way longer). i kind of miss the Sony's although they were kind of uncomfortable.

preferences anybody? soup cans instead? cell phone?

sony mdr - 7506
i've used them for hours every day since 2003. i carry them everywhere i go, and they're always crammed into my bag, unsheathed, putting up with all kinds of abuse.
most importantly, they sound fucking fantastic and give as faithful a representation of sound as i need.

shure e2 earbuds
i use these mainly to work out with and such. they lack a tiny bit on the bottom end (i'm guessing below 80hz?), but the definition is incredible for earbuds.

I have the Sony MDR-CD780. Not too easy to find anymore, but they sound great and are the most comfortable headphones I have ever used. The pads are like velvet or something.

I like Beyerdynamic cans, i have the DT150's which are excellent, but not the most comfortable headphones for long periods of use (they are'nt too bad though to be fair).

If you don't want closed back then the DT880's are supposed to be really incredible but i have'nt had the chance to try any myself.

Same issue with my only and last pair of MDR-700. I just switched from Beyerdynamic DT-770 to Sony MDR-7506, they are amazing, I use them with my laptop....as a matter of fact I liked the sound of it so much that I got the 7509 model for the studio.

i enjoy my sennheiser hd280's. they fold flat, have replacable parts and are very rugged.

also got a pair of shure e2 earbuds, which are a nice alternative to big ass headphones.

Same issue with my only and last pair of MDR-700. I just switched from Beyerdynamic DT-770 to Sony MDR-7506, they are amazing, I use them with my laptop....as a matter of fact I liked the sound of it so much that I got the 7509 model for the studio.

Same problem for me but I managed to strengthen the point with wire and gaffer tape before they got too bad and have been holding together well

I Have just sent my Stanton Pro DJ 3000 Headphones bacl to stanton to be repaired after they developed hairline cracks in the same place as the sonys you've described. Hopefully they'll fix them under warranty. Crap design, great sound though.

I hear Grados are good. Recommended by an audio friend of mine.

Also, I think that the better, and more expensive, of the Sennheiser HD25s are supposed to be really good as well.

I really like Sennheiser as a company, but there are a lot of good cans out there right now.

I have two pairs, HD280 pros: a little too much emphasis on the high end, but they were marketed as DJ cans, so perhaps the high end is highlighted so you can hear the attack of the kick.

I also have the HD265s, but they tend to be a little too boomy. But honestly, the sound is great. I don't think there are any phones that are truly flat.

I use grado 90's, they are really great for listening but I'm still on the fence about using them as monitors, because the sound is a little colored.

They have an enormous soundstage and pair really nicely with a tube driven headphone amp though.

I purchased several pairs of expensive AKG's but none of them have lasted.

Ironically my cheap radio shack phones still work fine.

Fuck Sony headphones, despite looking quite good most people I talk to say they break within months. Sennheiser HD-25's are probably the best headphones on the market, both in terms of sound quality and build design. They have a crisp sound to them, and reproduce bass the way it should be (i.e. not exagerated). Every part on them is user replacable. These are basically the only bit of kit I kept from my DJ setup. I, like everyone else who owns them, swears by them and they will probably be the last pair I ever buy. Really can't recommend them enough. Make sure you get the HD-25's though, there's a cheaper version that comes with those annoying double cords and you end up getting tangled up in them.
