Mixing ext. Synth in Ableton via External in-using Emu 1820

Please help me!
This is what I want to do.
I want to mix my external Synth in Ableton through the external in.
But I have got a big latenz when I do this.
I'am using the emu 1820!
When I put my audio (from my Synth) in the docking station (Audio in) of the emu 1820 , make a new strip in the patch mix with audio in from dock 1 -
I have no latenz and I hear both channels (Ableton and my external synth), but when I route the strip from my external synth to Asio In 1/2-Host
(to hear it in Ableton) and make in ableton a new channel with external in from 1&2 , I can hear my external synth through ableton but only with a big latenz. What is the problem?
I put the Asio Latenz to 4 ms!
