Ethernet does not have MIDI functionality.

You can do two things,

1. Buy a soundblasterMIDI cable and connect it to the gameport socket of the Xone:3D.
2. Buy a USB to MIDI interface like the MIDISPORT 1x1.

Personaly i would go for option 2 because this will work guaranteed, where option 1 could work with no real guarantee.

Good luck!

master computer - midi cable out
slave computer - same cable to midi in

master preferences - midi sync out
slave preferences - midi sync in

hit EXT on the slave
hit play on the master

they should start and stop together and track bpm

check the bold text in my signature for a link to a page in the tips and tricks that covers this.

you can sync by using a software called midi over lan, from music lab

it turns your ethernet port on a midi port.

i am using it and it works pretty cool!!

I like the concept of connecting several computers together in a building, nice product.

For syncing two computers the $129 for a MIDIoverLAN CP 3.0.1 Standard Edition (Mac/PC, 2 computers license) is quite a lot of money.

A midi-interface will cost you about 1/3.

If he has a midi keyboard connected via usb to his laptop (with midi in and out on the keybpard) he could use that then?
