i would say to stay a bit away from the walls to avoid strong reflections. i think that it doesn't care a lot if the sub is in front of you or shifted to the left/right, since very low frequencies do not suffer of too much directionality.

Be sure your room is long enough to hear the entire wave. Bass waves are quite long. anywhere, but right in front of you. You will deceive yourself and over compensate because you can't hear the whole bass wave.
