When the EIC is fully unpacked the samples directory in the
Library is about 14 GB on my system. Cool.

There are a few .ASD files in there (probably from me
auditioning some of the samples) but most are missing.

I was wondering if I should run the 'analyze audio' on
this folder? I probably won't ever use these samples in clips,
but does Sampler or Simpler need them for anything?

I have a lot of hard disk storage, but still, all these extra
analysis files will be substantial and add to my system backup
time, so I can erase the .ASD files if they aren't needed.

(Prior to installing Live 6 and the EIC it took me about 2 hours
to back up everything via USB and about 45 minutes via Firewire.
Now it takes about 5 hours via USB and about 1.5 hours via
Firewire. I use Norton Ghost 10 for backup).

BTW, I should mention that I appreciate the attention paid
in making the EIC. The instruments I auditioned so far sound
wonderful. For those who don't have it (yet) each instrument
(of those I checked so far at least) is in a rack with several
useful macro knobs aleady assigned to important timbre
elements.

Hi arachnaut,

the asd files are created when the samples are used for the
first time, there is no need to created them in advance.

The .asd files are very small compared to the samples,
they will not need much extra space.

Indeed, I went ahead and generated all the analysis files (which
takes a while!) and they increase the size only minisculely.
Before the library was 14.1 GB, I think, and now it is 14.2 GB.

Thank you for the fine attention to detail that is evident in this collection.

The samples themselves appear to be in some unusual AIF format.
I couldn't find a combination of raw options for Cool Edit to open
these files. Is this by design or have I just not tried hard enough?

In the meantime can you judge Piano, bass and sax?

Oh dear, this is quite a request, how to judge?

Piano:

There are several Grand Pianos - draft, lite, ultra lite and 'plain'.
I'll choose the biggest set - what I called plain:
It has 704 samples. Key range: A-1 to C8
Each key has its own sample in 8 velocity zones.
It takes about 30 seconds to load.
When I start Live with an empty set Live takes up about 5 Meg of
active memory (258 Meg total) [reported by Taskinfo]
When I load the Grand Piano this changes to
30 Meg in Ram 455 Meg total
When I play all the keys and velocities to get the samples
into ram I see Live taking 136 Meg Ram active, 455 total.
If I try to put all the samples in RAM it complains - it needs 5 GB
and I only have 2GB.

Clearly you will need a serious machine to use this.

Overall, the sound is clear, well-defined, and the velocity zones
seem to blend well.

Bass - do you mean bass guitar?
There are some choices, I'll pick 'P Bass Finger'
It has 3 samples from B0 to D#3 on each note in 3 velocity zones.
Sounds fine to me, but I'm not a big fan of this instrument

Alto Sax Legato
Key range C2 to G#4 in 4 velocity ranges.
Sounds OK, I'm not a sax fan. You'll be better off
finding a jazz person to give you advice, my tastes are pretty odd.

I was most impressed by the Nylon guitar and harp gliss.
