cpu drain NOW, after using for a year?

So, I've been using Live 5 for a year now. Love it and it's been great. So, now I notice that the cpu is pushing 50% or higher with just a few clips running off the hard drive with NO plugins! I've never had this problem before. In fact, I just finished a track a few weeks ago with tons of clips and tons of plugins and had to freeze some of those to get it down to about 50%.
Has anybody else experienced this issue? I tried messing with the output config and some other things, with no help. I'm at a loss. Somebody have any ideas?
My system is:
G5 iMac 2ghz
2gb ram
160gb hd
10.4.6
Mbox (usb)
I did try the adamjay test and was getting a peak of 43% cpu....ugh...i need help!
