[jab]Live 6.0.1 & Axiom 61

In midi preferences using control surface "Axiom" (not classic). Axiom on preset 20. All controls work well except encoders - you turn the encoder for a while and then finally the live parameter begins to move in the right direction - but when I turn the encoder back in the opposite direction the parameter still moves in the other direction.

Anyone else figured out how to fix this?

Hi gordon,

the encoders work fine for me.
You could try the following:
1. Select the classic Axiom 49/61 Control Surface in the Preferences.
2. Press the Dump button.
3. Re-select preset 20 on the Axiom (by first selecting Preset 19).
4. Re-select the Axiom Control Surface in Live's Preferences.

cheers,
Jan

Jan,
I've tried using the classic option and the data dump but it still doesn't work. Maybe I'm not explaining myself clearly - so I'll try again.

I've attached a print-screen of my Live MIDI Preferences:
Image

And the Axiom Control Surface reference from Live Manual:
Image

Here are the steps I'm following:
1. Select preset 20 on Axiom control
2. I double-click on an instrument from the browser to load it
3. Arm track by clicking on that button (section 3 on control reference diagram) on Axiom
4. Track arms successfully and can even adjust volume with corresponding slider (section 1 on control reference diagram above).
5. Up to this point I have NOT had to go to midi mappings at all and map any control parameter to anything - this is all working because of the controller I selected in the Live MIDI preferences. Per the control surface I should also be able to use the encoders to adjust parameters (section 5 of Live control surface reference) without any additional mapping.
5. So, I turn an encoder clockwise that corresponds to one of the macro controls (section 5 on control reference diagram) and the parameter in live doesn't move at all > I keep turning (several full rotations) and now the parameter starts to move clockwise too > I now turn the encoder counter clockwise yet the Live parameter continues to move clockwise (as I continue to turn the encoder) until it reaches the far right > keep turning encoder counter clockwise (several full rotations) and now the parameter finally starts to move counter clockwise > if I reverse encoder direction again same thing happens - parameter has to go all the way to the left before it will go back in other direction.

Please help. I don't want to have to map each parameter and would just like the Axiom driver I've selected to work as documented.

Thanks,
Gordon

Hi gordon,

this sounds really strange and I was not able
to reproduce this behaviour.

Could you please try this (just to see what will happen):
1. With the Axiom Control Surface active in the prefs,
turn an Midi Map Mode.
2. Now select the first Macro of your Instrument rack
and turn the first encoder.
3. When you leave the Midi Map Mode, the Control
Surface's instant mapping is substituted with your
manual mapping.

Now, does the macro still behave the same strange way?

If it does, I would assume that the encoders are set
up to deploy the wrong mode (maybe absolute instead
of relative). This, however, should have been fixed by
the dump I suggested earlier.

cheers,
Jan

Hi Jan,
If I map the encoder using the map mode then it does work correctly. But, I don't want to have to map the controller. I like having it control the armed track - and I don't want to have to map for every live set.

I don't think the problem is with my controller - since when I map the encoder it does work correctly.

If it helps, I'm using an iMac G4 with Live.

Jan,
I've been reading about the new Instant Mappings with Live 6.0. I'd like to try creating a custom instant mapping - because my hunch is that the instant mapping for "Axiom" has the wrong encoder map mode. Could you send me a UserConfiguration.txt with the "Axiom" values and let me play around with it?

Thanks,
Gordon

Hi gordon,

please have a look at
http://www.ableton.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=47157

You should be able to find the necessary files in your
preferences folder. If not, Alex posted links to the files
in the above thread.

cheers,
Jan
