Ableton Forum

OK so a lot of people are (in my mind fairly) complaining that the general forum has too much stuff they arent interested in.

my suggestion for a solution is simple. here goes.

* When posting a topic on the forum, there should be a checkbox underneath which lets the user select "Off Topic".

* Every account settings/profile should then incorporate a checkbox titled "filter OT posts" which if checked would not show posts checked as off topic.

Problem solved.

There's a simple alternative already in place that anyone with basic communication skills can do:

1) Label off-topic subjects [OT].

2) Put a simple, concise, common-sense descriptive subject when starting a thread.

3) Post your thread in the appropriate section of the forum.

It ain't rocket science...

Great idea... except that implementing this solution would require the abes to write a custom module for phpBB, which I can pretty much guarantee you isn't going to happen.

They could always update to the latest version. I've seen phpBB forums with post tags.

The music forum should be an offtopic forum and the music stuff integrated back into the general/live forum!

I think I agree. I much prefer music to politics in regards to being OT in the general.

why do you people let topics and subjects that you don't favor get to you so much? The way i see it is, if all that was posted in the USERS GENERAL section would be strictly musical\technical topics, how are you going to get to know each other? Without all the discussions and point of views posted in the occasionial OT thread, we really wouldn't know alot about each other. It *is* the general user section... Isn't that a place where you learn about the users? There's a LIVE sub forum, which leads me to believe anything is free to be discussed here.

The fact (imo) remains that as new people are atttracted to live they go to the forum to see what's up with its community and everyone is attacking each ther- then this negativity expands into other threads as well.

Sure there is some negativity and unfriendlinesswhen viewing other peoples' tunes, but it is more of an opportunity to make our, at one point, ability to be mature for a music forum shine.

It would be very progressive if we had a Politics tab at least. Then people could at least feel righteous for telling people to keep it eleswhere.

I agree that I miss music in general, but then it's not like you'd go to jail for posting your tunes in general as well

the only downside is the general forum moves quickly so you'd tend to get buried

good idea, wouldnt it take more effort to implement than a another section for non-music related BS ? ...at any rate, this is a good idea and I would love to see it implemented. or another section. either is good

The only reason I don't like the OT stuff, is that it buries the genuine Live related questions and topics that much faster. It's certainly easy enough to just ignore the OT treads and not open them, but it makes it that much harder t track down the topics you are trying to watch (and yes, I know about email notifications). I come here for LIVE, not for politics, religion, general immaturity, or name calling.

I can understand why people like the OT stuff, but at the same time, I don't understand the Ableton's insistance that it has to share the same forum with topics that directly apply to their product. A seperate OT forum would serve both people just as easily IMO. People who just want to learn more about Live can do so without the distraction of the increasing numbers of OT threads. And people who want to just chat and share OT viewpoints with other Live users can do so without upsetting the Live types.

It's not like this forum has tons and tons of sub-forums like some websites, so I think one more would really only make EVERYONE happy. No?

You guys are looking for solutions for the forum.
While you should actually look at solutions for the users.

Ableton will never have a politics tab. It took almost 2 years of getting them so far to add a music section.
And i think we've been asking for a preset section since Live 4....

The main problem with Ableton, is that their ideas have huge holes in them.
They redesigned the site, that took almost a year. They let Ableton NY produce videos, which also took a long while to get going.
And the videos are basically advertising or simple tips with hardly any tricks.

They invented Live Clips, which for some strange reason don't get the attention that the format is worthy of having.

And they seem to piss off a large majority of the users on a regular basis. (by removing or replacing functions)

Ableton is far from a bad company. But their current rate of market growth is going too fast for the growth of the actual company.

They have far bigger problems then a bunch of users that want an off topic section. Which is useles anyway, because 8 out of 10 users just do whatever the hell they feel like....

So there's the problem. This place isnt big enough for all of us.
Adding forum sections wont help.
There is need for a community project on a much larger scale. The forum is just a small part of that.

If Ableton want a forum that is on topic, they could get that by creating more Ableton related topics. A perfect example would be Robert Henke's cool threads about thunder, generative ambient and many more...
Or competitions...
Or releasing more effects and instruments that people can complain about..

It's all on topic...

actually, if you do a count it's not really the OT that's burying topics

it's that the userbase has steadly increased with every release

the percentage of OT is still alot less than live/music/tech

topics get buried because alot of people post
the "view posts since last vist" thing is a good solution, you dont miss much and when you see that big list you dont bother clicking on the shit you cant be arsed with
