Recording MIDI bug(?)... again

Hello, so for some reason I though this was fixed when I was testing the beta, but I just encountered it again. Can someone test this to see if i'm crazy or not? Here it is:
Fisrt arm a MIDI track for recording. Make sure you have quantize on, 16th note preferably. now click the transport record button on, press play and record a simple for bar loop, but try to be as close to the beat as possible. once done recording, if you check the clip, what you recorded should be quantized properly.
Now do this, take another MIDI track, arm it for recording. Now without clicking on the transport record button, just hit play. once it starts playing, click on the transport record button, and start recording MIDI notes, again try to be as closed and perfect to the beat as possible. stop the recording. Now when you check out the MIDI clip you recorded, the notes are not quantized perfectly, but are offset instead. you will have to select all the notes and quantize them manually!
I just tested it right now to make sure, and it happened again. It's been happening since Live 5...

here's a picture of what i'm talking about. i used a QWERTY keyboard for playing the MIDI notes and both clips were consolidated.
again, clip 01 was recorded by arming the track, clicking the record button and hitting play. clip 02 was recorded by arming the track, hitting play, then clicking record while playing. quantize was set to 16th notes.
here's
the project too

Hi,
I can't reproduce the problem here using Live 6.0.1 on a PC. You're saying that, with 'record quantize' set to 16th, recording into the arrangement, if you first engage the global record, you get different results than if you first play the set and then engage the global record button, right?
Why do you have to consolidate? If you record just a clip, there is no consolidation needed, so, is there a step that I miss here?
Kind regards,
Amaury

correct. also i have pre-count on.
i always consolidate MIDI when i record while looping playback.
ok, this is pretty bizzare. just did a second test and this are the findings: first of all looping is off. i arm a track for record, click global record, click play, record midi notes, stop playback. in the arrange view the notes in the clip look quantized. in clip view they also look quantized.
now, i arm another midi track for record, click global play, let it play for a bit, click global record, play midi notes, stop playback. in arrange view the notes look offset and not quantized. in clip view however, they are quantized.
now two things happened: when i highlighted the range from 1.1.1 to 9.1.1 of the second clip and consolidated the whole range, it created a new consolidated clip, obviously, but now the notes in both arrange view and the clip view look shifted and not properly quantized.
i also found it interesting that before doing th above consolidation, i took the original second clip and opied it to a new track, and the new clip looked quantized in both arrange view and clip view...

Hi,
I could now reproduce it, and thus report to our developers. Thank you so much for the detailed description, that really helps.
I can't say when this will be corrected and how, but hope soon.
Kind regards,
Amaury

I have the same issue. I'm not using record quantize, but any midi I record in is being offset, It also seems to be the same offset on audio coming in from an instrument playing off midi clock - eg controlled from an external sequencer. It happens using both the internal clock from Live and with Live synched to exernal clock, I tried 2 different hardware sequencers.
Pressing session record seems to have no effect for me, all the tracks are delayed the same amount.
It's happening with all of my Midi interfaces, which are all MOTU, I'm using a , MIDI Express XT, Fastlane, and the midi ports on my 828mk2 audio interface over firewire. I'm not sure if it could be a MOTU driver issue or if it is in Live. I've not tried with any other applications.
This is on a 15in Mac Book Pro, running 10.4.8.

Is this a problem for Live 5 also?
If so, will it be fixed too...?

i've noticed this on every version of Live that had MIDI

just reproduced (6.0.5).
I found that it quantizes inside clip i.e. relatively to clip start!
So if you push rec button between the quantization points the notes have time offset in arrangement according to the offset of clip start and auto Quantization amount.
to test it:
• Do the procedure mentioned by roby,
• now set the same quantization you set in auto quantize but in arrangement (e.g. 1/16) and
• drag the clip to next quantizations point.
This way, most probably it jumps to the correct position. It's not really a workaround but an try to help figuring out what's going on.

Hi,
No need to make too many efforts to reproduce it, it is a known issue, and more of a specification issue than a 'bug'. It is noted, and we're thinking of ways to propose a better solution, though it links to other areas of the software. We'll come with a solution as soon as possible.
For now. the advice is to arm the track first and then launch the record/play from a spot on the grid.
Kind regards,
Amaury
