Doing a classical recording with a friend. Just a piano and a vocalist. What's the best miking set up?

What kind of mics do you have? I'd use a large diaphragm condenser, preferably tube, for the vox, and either a spaced pair of omni condensers near the hammers on the piano, or cardioid condensers positioned XY. If it's a grand piano, you can try putting the mics underneath, for less vocal bleed.

The blumlein pair is good for capturing stereo in a 360 degree sound field; it would be good if placed in the middle of a room to capture an ensemble. I wouldn't necessarily use it to close mic anything though.

Blumlein can work, also google "ORTF" if what you have are cardiod condensers.
