Hi Folks, i'm a noob when it comes to things Mac. What are the various wave editors out there? I'm used to Wavelab and SoundForge on the PC. Any recommendations for comparable tools on the Mac?

thank you!

i do all editing in arrange view of live, then use the consolidation function... really is just as good (if not better) that any wave editor... and also keeps things like loop lengths extremely simple.

but if you really want a wave editor... there's Peak and Audacity.

As a switcher as well, I used to use cooledit pro 2.0 before moving over.. I can recommend the following:

- Audacity (Free)
- Soundtrack Pro (comes with final cut studio, so very expensive if you just want that program)
- DSP Quattro (very nice, under AU$200 or so but isn't universal yet)
- Peak LE/Pro/ProXT (feature-packed, pricey, but cheaper than final cut studio)

Trust me, I was looking for the right combination for a long time, till I realised Audacity/Soundtrack Pro does the job (nice to have friends in film willing to part with their software sometimes) :)

I use Amadeus ($30) since it can import FLAC. Rogue Amoeba came out with Fission ($32) a couple of months ago but I haven't had a chance to try it yet.

granted only audacity and peak (with the Lame plugin) lets you convert sounds directly to mp3. I rather use SoundConverter for that, as it'll convert almost any audio file to another audio file, there's like 30 different combos

Audacity is good, and if it doesn't do the job there's the aforementioned pieces of software and my personal favourite Wave Editor (what a creative name, eh?) by Audiofile Engineering. They have a 15 day trial version.

For me, this was the Forge-replacement. Your mileage may vary, though.

Asw a recent switcher who does mastering on the side, I've been looking into this as well. I like the way Wave Editor from Audiofile is headed, RedBook CD burning should be coming very soon. DSP Quattro would be my second choice, though as mentioned, it's not yet UB.

Fwiw DSP Quattro when it's UB will be my editor of choice. I own Peak and ST Pro.

Wave Editor by audio-engineering is simple and powerful. I was a DSP-Quattro user, sometimes still am, but find Wave Editor simply easier and quicker to use.
