Does this exist outside of ableton land?

not for mac... I've searched near and far. on pc I know there are some though I can't point you at a link, someone else will though I'm sure

Seriously, though, there are a couple of different tools you can use - I've seen similar things done in Max/msp, and I know that people have created standalone apps to run next to Ableton Live for modulation things.

along the Max/MSP lines, you might want to check out cycling 74's Pluggo or Mode, can't remember which, but one is a huge pack of plug-ins, the other is a few synths designed modularly, so I would think in either that there are several modulation plug-ins similar to that.

Yup, im pretty shure there is a midi lfo plugg in pluggo. Though its a long time ago since I tried it, and seem to remember I couldnt get it to work proparly..

i've been testing this idea out with live and pluggo...

the good news is that it works. the bad is that it works in an awkward way.
currently there doesnt appear to be any way to make a MIDI fx plugin - so any plugin compiled to work on midi trax is treated as an instrument... which means you cant put it before instruments! remember this plugin doesnt process sound, only midi.

you have to stick it on its own midi track and route the midi out to specifc trax...
i think it would work really well for ppl with external hardware, and not quite so well for vsti.

will be looking for testers soon, pluggo / mac osx only at the moment...

Another great option is Plogue Bidule. I've been using Bidule to generate midi signals and LFOs for the past 6 months live and in the studio and it works flawlessly. It's really quick to build modules in as well. However, having something totally integrated would be amazing.

I really, really believe in this feature..
LFO's are what for instance make Reason and Reaktor very powerful applications..
LFO's are not only very nice for sounddesign but can be very useful for live performance as well..
Since you only have 2 hands they can automate all kind of processes on the fly..

Personally I don't find drawing envelopes a very creative process..
LFO's let you discover a totally new world of sound because you cannot draw and change such envelopes on the fly..
And the combination of LFO's and Racks can really kill all you other 3rd party plugins..

The pluggo thing sounds nice but I rather vote for a native Live plug..
this could also be an extension on the racks, instead of a solo plug..
since there's already a proper infrastructure; macro mapping..
so if we could modulate the macro dials with a LFO that would be great..
And if you would modulate 1 dial with 2 LFO's you can could make very complex waveforms as well!

currently, for all Mac people, I really recommand to take a look at Numerology..

It's a great sequence app that also host LFO's for modulation..
Easy syncage with Live and really acceptable demo limitations as well..

it was just a quick mock-up..
phase offset should be a parameter..

The next midi plugs ableton make have to be LFO's. That would be class...
