Crash, and uninstall problem

Hi. I installed Live Lite 4 M-Audio edition which came with my FW410 interface. Seemed to work OK. I got the free upgrade to Live Lite 5, so I deleted 4 and installed it. Seemed OK, till after working with it for a couple of hours things got weird. Playback of clips didnt start properly when they were triggered, a couple of times a clip would start to play, then stop, and later the cursor became sluggish, just a general slowdown of response. Rebooted, and the same thing happened later. So I did a system restore to go back before the update. When I tried to start Live Lite 4, I got this message "A serious program error has occurred. You should try to save your work under a new name using the Save As command and restart the application". But Live hadnt even opened at all, so this didnt make sense.I decided to uninstall Live Lite 4 again, this time I got the message "could not open INSTALL.LOG file". So I restored BACK to after the Live Lite 5 install, and was able to uninstall it OK.
I am considering paying for the update to the full version of Live 6, but am concerned I will have lots of problems (and since I found this forum, I'm frankly more concerned, since apparently a lot of Live 6 users are reporting problems). My laptop is a Compaq running Windows XP Home Edition with a 1.4 gb Centrino cpu, with 512 megs ram.Anybody have any idea what's going on?
