Try this (L6.02):



Start with a new Project with nothing loaded



Ensure you're in Session view,

From the Browser drag a whole tune you'd like to DJ with which isn't pre warp markered (MP3 or WAV - doesn't matter) in a slot in an Audio channel.

Ensure Warp mode is disabled for the clip.

Now we wish to measure an approximate BPM of the piece using Tap Tempo.

Play back the clip

Use the Tap Tempo function (either by Mouse clicking or assigned MIDI or QWERTY key) to Tap the tempo of the piece.

Randomly (usually within 15 seconds of Tapping) the clip's playback position will unexpectedly advance further in the clip when it should (and never did prior to L6). It always jumps to a random position by a random amount without warning. Subsequent taps (due to the jump) skew the resulting meaurement.

Anyone else having this problem?

I'm pretty sure It did that in 5 too.

the reason it does that on an unwarped clip is:
At 120 bpm - 4 bars in is 705.6k samples, ergo the play head is at sample 705,600. But at 150bpm a bar lasts fewer samples so four bars is more like 450,000 samples .. so the playhead should be at sample 450,000 is the bpm is 150.

I have been annoyed by this jump before, but I don't see any solution. The play head would have to be slaved to the individual sample position of a clip, but it is not, it is slaved to the master (musical) position.

It's nature of the beast and the same (or similar) in any other DAW I think, If you increase or decrease the BPM in cubase a 'bar' of samples will soon be too long or short to loop as a 'bar' , the playhead is tied to the bars, so as bpm shifts the offset increases or decreases.

I hope that makes some kind of sense.




BTW, the big numbers above are only from memory,not exact calculations!

Resurrecting this old thread to ask a related question:

Is there any way to avoid the glitch/jump/hiccup when a clip's warp button is engaged while playback is already occurring as an unwarped clip? That is, if you turn on the warp button while an unwarped clip is playing, even if you match the master tempo to the the exact clip tempo for the segment, and even if the global quantization is off or set to an easy bar, and even if your warp markers are dead on, (am I forgetting any other variables that are within my control in ableton?), you'll still hear a lurch, so to speak, as the warp settings "get in gear."

All the while, I've prepared the global tempo to accommodate the tempo of my clips, be it through a Master scene BPM message or otherwise. Now I'd like to see what would happen if I brought all my tracks in unwarped, cued them, found the right tempo for the unwarped version (either by tapping it out or referring to the clip BPM), and then engaged warp with a script on a physical controller, ex post facto. That way, so long as the clip is warped decently, I don't need to preconceive how the track will enter my set.

Any thoughts?
