Hey guys, I just turned 30 - what HW should I splurge on?

Post by steve-o » Sat Dec 02, 2006 3:26 am

I got a huge refund from my student loans, its my 30th birthday, and I want to get something really special that I'll never forget, I'm thinking:

Evolver Keyboard
LittlePhatty
Juno 60
Onyx Mixing Desk
A really good hardware compressor

But I'm studying for exams right now, so I can spend the time to do the research.

If you spend $2k tops, what would it be?

And I just wanted to say that I've been on this forum since Live 1.5, and its been my number one source of knowledge. Thanks to everybody - a really great community.

Get a used Machinedrum and an MEK. That should come in right at $2K. Of course, I don't know what you already have, so...

Here's my current wishlist:

Prophet VS
Roland V-Synth
TR-909
Machinedrum SPS-1 UW MkII, Monomachine SFX-6
Moog Voyager Signature Edition
Virus TI Polar
Live 8, Operator, Sampler
Reaktor 5, Massive, FM8, Sound Toys Bundle
Pro Tools 7.4
Mac G5 Dual 2.5 GHz
Macbook Pro 15-in. 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

Someone needs to go reboot b0unce.

New monitors - tone starts there $100-infinity
GOOD headphones
Pre-amp(s) - if you do live music in Live - $150-$2k
Virus or Nord Lead (whichever flavor to fit the budget) - ~700-$2k
EVOLVERs sound great, never used one, just in stores
mpc1k - the phreshmaker of beats ~$700-$950
Sherman Filter Bank - if you have outboard gear, this thing is SICK ~$700
Buy vst(s) you've used but never purchased but LOVE
Onyx mixing desk looks good
computer stuff - backup gear to save your system, RAM, 2nd monitor
a decent desk, eg a Jerker (ikea)

Or get fat a laptop. ;)

Spend slowly, savor the flavor, learn one thing at a time, buy used if you can.

And my paypal to transfer funds into is: tonedeft@gimmegimme.com

What would I get? Getting a Brian Moore iGuitar 9.13 in green (backordered), Pod XT, Axon midi box, just got an mpc1k and condener mic, I'm in a similar situation. <thankful>

Thanks for all the responses!!!

What I got

MBP Core Duo 2.0 <-- aint gettin a new laptop
Roland V-synth <-- tweakers delight
Evolver Desktop <-- I want the keyboard so I can hook these two up (it already sounds excessive to me, but I played the keyboard and LOVE it; the desktop takes me way more fiddling)
Roland SH-101 <-- I've been sampling and resampling this thing for years
Akai S6000 - I use it mainly as an effects box; I like having another A/D stage and crankin' it so that my bass gets all Justice style

I'm leaning toward real analog shit; that's where I'm headed. I love the Juno 60 my homie has. I want something modern like that...

From your list I'd go with the Moog, then the evolver would come second.

If it were me I'd probably get a machine drum

Or a Pioneer DJM 800

Then I'd put the change towards the new car stereo I am saving for.
