A weird glitch strikes when I try to export audio from Cubase VST 5.1 as Rewire master for Live 2.03. The exported audio is garbled, coming out as short chopped-up pieces of audio coming seemingly at random from all of the 8 active rewire channels. Strangely, audio playback in cubase is fine. I can also export from Cubase or Live independently.
The last thing I remember doing before this bug was an experiment to see what would happen if I attempted to render an audio file using Live while it was rewired to Cubase, rather than export from Cubase. I hoped for a dry piece of audio, expected an error message, but got a Cubase crash instead.

Nothing I can change, big or small, has any effect on this problem. I'm starting to think I was mad when it was all working smoothly.

Anyone else in a similar boat?

Does Cubase 5.1 render audio "faster than realtime"?
If so, it may happen that the audio can not be delivered in the required time from your harddisk. The only solution for this problem is to load your samples into the RAM. With Live 2.x you can do this with a virtual RAM disk (see the FAQ) and with Live 3 you can load individual samples directly into the RAM in the Clip-view panel.

Cubase 5.1 offers a couple of options regarding export speeds.
There is "allow plugins to update themselves" during export. This slows export down almost to playback speed. I usually enable it just to be safe, even though most plugins don't cause problems.
There is also "plugin delay compensation" in the audio options. I haven't noticed any benefit of this with my system.

Neither of these options (in all 4 possible combinations) has any effect on my glitch.

I'm sure it isn't a hard disk streaming problem because
a) playback is fine even with buffers down to about 800 samples
b) until recently I have been able to export 7 stereo tracks from Live via rewire plus virtual instruments and kontakt/vsampler data sequenced in Cubase, and now I can't export even 1 track from Live via rewire.

I have an increasing hunch that Cubase might be getting it's 're-wires crossed' :-0

Do you use a Mac OS9?
If so have you tried trashing the Cubase preferences?
