can hear Bass preamped into PC, but it doesnt record

Bass ---> small Amp ---> PC microphone/line-in input on sound card. So I can hear it fine through the PC speakers. But nothing shows up in Ableton. I've tried fiddling the settings of ins/outs, changing the audio hardware config/prefs.. but I'm not sure what to do exactly to record live bass playing (or guitar, once i get it figgered out). help and thanks greatmuchly.
