The P4 is less efficient, so you have to draw
a correspondence along the lines of
P4/1.2GHz "=" P3/900MHz
P4/1.5GHz "=" P3/1.1GHz
or so. I'm not sure what the exact
correspondence is, but it's something you
can find in reviews.
The advantages of the P4 are:
-scalability to higher processor speeds
(up to 2.4GHz now, whereas you cannot purchase
a PIII which delivers equivalent performance)
-support for faster memory (both cache and
main RAM)
You have to work out the price vs performance
thing for yourself, however.
For many floating-point intensive
applications like audio, the Athlons seem
to be substantially faster. Their floating
point units have been widely acclaimed,
and they have other design advantages.
Also, they tend to be cheaper than the
P4s. In a price vs performance comparison,
you could also include the AMD Duron,
Intel Celeron,... it turns into a bit of
a nest to pick through.
