a cheap quick dirty sampler, I need ideas

I'm thinking about getting a cheap dirty sampler that I can sample things very very quickly and trigger them back. the key here would be very quick sample, very quick delete of said sample so I can sample something new all on the fly, I would be sending midi from ableton continuously to the sampler in a rhythm and then continuously giving the sampler new sounds to be played by that rhythm so I don't want any hiccups during the sample swapping if you know what I mean.

something like the sp202 would work BUT it deletes samples very slowly, I want something I can record play back and bang it's gone.

any ideas?

I was actually considering trying to find a casio sk1 with midi bend as that seems like it would do nicely...

hold on a sec... would I be able to trigger my kaoss pad 2 samples from an external source? I always thought it didn't do that but maybe I'm wrong

how long does the sample need to be, and what paramaters do you want to control on it?

i used to do something like this with my Akai s612. it can only hold one sample (up to 8 sec's? depending on rate), so i would send it a sequence of 16th or 32nd notes from the MPC while sampling from a mic or other source. it instantly samples over the top of the old one, or you can overdub in a degraded lo-fi way. on the s612 you can then change the loop settings, make use of its buttery filter, or (for much enjoyment) play with the sample start/end sliders to 'chop' the sample as it's being re-triggered.

not sure if this is something like what you were thinking.

that sounds fantastic, you can do all that on the fly without going through too many sub menu's and what not?

ohh and it looks like it has a input for a record trigger? would that be for a foot switch to start stop recording??

I'm very keenly interested in this.

how do those little non button buttons feel? I've never tried those little plastic things, pretty responsive or do you have to give them a good hard push?

also, would it be possible to set it up so the input is not audible only the playback of samples is?

There has to be a software solution for this...

One alternative would be to use a midi gate. That wouldn't sample per se, but allow you to chop any incoming audio with a midi controlled pattern. Add a software looper (or just ordinary clip recording/looping) to get the sampling capability.

Some other clever ideas?

Hm. I reckon you could do this with a delay that allows for 100% feedback.

check out the akai

you should be able to get one cheap

ive heard that the filters on the older akai samplers were great as well

More software suggestions... Try ioplongs Splonki or flitchSplifter:

They allow you sample/freeze incoming audio and sequence it in different ways.

damn johnisfaster, it looks like are in gear buying mode. i've been there. fun/stressful.

anyways, since you were already looking towards the monome i wanted to show you this:

http://wiki.monome.org/view/AppMaxMspEmp

its one of the newer softwares for it. it isnt featured in a video yet. might be close to what you want.

i played around with it, kinda crazy. dont want to seem like a total fanboy, but this thing really really is amazing you should also see flip:
http://wiki.monome.org/view/AppMaxMspFlip

you basically route live audio through it or load a clip. it would work as a quick sampler like you are talkin about. record into one of its 4 "samplers" then resequence in real time using the monome pads. kinda like realtime recycle or a controllable beat repeat. hard to explain, awesome to use.

wow, creepy I did this too. I'm actually kinda sorry I sold the thing, I wanted multi-sample and all the fancy filtering, I triggered mine with an Alesis HR-16, shit was tight I can say that for it.

I'd use a redsound cycloops. Very basic but very cool to use in a live situation.

John, if you email me the SPECIFIC specs you want I will sooo build a pluggo for you and anyone els who wants a copy. Quick and dirty.

Does it need to remember more than one slot?
Do you want a "Save recording" button?
Do you need any sample manipulation buttons, like loop on/off, start/end point modulation?
What should happen to the audio as it enters the audio plugin? Should it always be passd, or should there only be audio when playing back the sample? I think a regular audio plugin as an insert would work best for work-flow, but you may have some better ideas.

your the man machinate. I'm prolly still gonna get a hardware still as I need some machines to look at but a software version would be awesome too.

does it need more than one slot: nope.

save recording: nope

sample manipulation: I'm thinking basic pitch shift, loop in/out would be about it

audio as it enters: I'm thinking an option for audio thru or only hearing playback sounds. I personally only want to hear the playback but I imagine hearing the through audio would be useful in the studio so I don't have to keep turning it off.

as far as a plug would go I'd love to be able to automate rec start and stop, loop start and end. there was a plugin called JS mini sample out there that did this but it's pc only and I'm a mac kid so pluggo would be the way to go.

in fact... go check out the JS mini-sample and you'll get a good idea (not exactly but close) of what I want.
