Ping pong recording

The old skool way of creating more tracks with a four-tracker was to record on tracks 1-3 and then mix/record them onto track 4. Now tracks 1-3 are open for new recording.
Is there a way to do this with Live?
I tried rendering 3 midi tracks to disk. When I opened my .wav file it came in as 3 midi tracks?
Any old analog dudes out there?
Thanx
Joey

Why restrict yourself to that style of recording when your computer is capable of so much more?

Yes, you can bounce tracks to another one: set each of their outputs to go to the 4th track, then arm the 4th and record away.

I don't know what you mean.

sure, render to disk should work, not sure what happened to you there.
also, you can route multiple tracks to one audio track with the ins and outs section, just like on a 4 track.
you might want to check out the "routing and i/o" section on the manual.

guess you guys posted while i looked up the heading for routing in the manual... ha..
also, i can see reasons to do this in live:
- cpu saver ---> (lessay i have an impulse routed to 8 separate tracks with effects, why not bounce to stereo pair, and do a "save as" so i can fiddle with the mix later if need be)
- ease of arrangement ---> i often bounce down stuff to stereo files just to simplify arranging, again i do a save as so i can go back to the version with separate tracks

Thanx to all, I give that I try!
The reason I need to do this is because my controller came with Live lite.
Lite limits the number of tracks/effects I can use.
I don't want to "Go Live" and upgrade, so to speak, without knowing that I like this recording program.
Thanx again! As a novice in digital recording I really do appreciate the help!

Ah, so you are limited to 4 audio tracks at a time? That explains it.
Well, the option to bounce it old-school style is there so go for it!

resample should work right? + it's faster than render to disc.

I've got the Motu ultralite as well, too many outs I wouldn't be using, what a shame...
Butm no kidding, i remember I was so productive when I was using live in demo mode and resampling my stuff. Oh, well...

Well, you might use those outputs for in insane surround mix someday... I have to say I don't use them though. I didn't get it for the ins and outs but more for the quality. I generally just use one line in and headphone or main outs. Still, I know I have the extra connectivity if I need it.
I did some stuff in Live Lite 4. What was quite creative was exporting drum loops to Cool Edit Pro and getting chopped off cymbal sounds. Definitely cool. But I have Live 6 now and I'm not complaining.

i remember the days (early 90`s) when i was infected with "techno" and everything i had was a cheap and poor yamaha keyboard (psr 400?) without any kind of filter or something like this and a atari with an cracked cubase 2.0......it was maybe the best time in musik i ever had.

Datapopstar, that's exactly what I meant, too many options = too many ways to get lost. I spend more time tweaking knobs and parameters than actually making music. I've got dozens of unachieved projects because I get dizzy with all that I could do and don't do that much in the end. Well, it's simply a matter of time cause I bought the full version of Live just 3 months ago and I need to focus again on my goals. (but still, crossfades would be nice)

I'm very happy with Live 6 too

, it's my main and only DAW (but please Abes, give me crossfades) and i chose the ultralite for the same reasons you did. Man, those preamps changed my life.
Cheers
