virtual reality music making.....

this was in the 'live reinvents modernism' thread and I thought it would be interesting to give it it's own thread to see what people think

live could well be the first stepping stone in this kind of thing, and for all I know there could already be stuff going on in this area, so I would greatly apreciate any links or ideas...

maybe the first step is getting the VR controllers for live - Imagine having someone up on the DJ box with VR visor and gloves on making music which is then graphically shone into the club with a projector......people could dance with around the sounds......

here's the original thread:

something I would sell my soul to get my hands on and would very much love to be a part of developing is virtual reality sound sculpture music making programs.

Basically I've been thinking a long time about how the absolute ulimate bridge between the material world and the 'etherial world of music' (if you like) would be to physically pick up 3dimensional objects in a VR environment and 'sculpt' them into the sounds you want - like if yo want the sound a bit duller (like a low pass filter say) you use a colour palette like in photoshop. Of course the connection between -and you change it from a shiny, satin 'finish' to a matte.

Then once you have the shape/sound you want, you bounce it in time in the VR environment (you could scan in pictures of the enviroment you want - even room you're in, feed them into the machine and then operate in that room, maybe even enable bits of furniture as your menus or parameters tools etc....)

so say you want a kick - maybe it would look like a bowling ball for a quite bright kick sound, if it was voice activated too, you could count in with:"set tempo 1,2,3,4" then it works like tap tempo and takes over to start it going.

So you bounce the ball wherever you want it in the mix (L,R,F,B - 3d surround)

it takes over, then your hi-hat could be like a silver plate, bounce it up high, where and when you want it.

Carry, on like this, you could set the parameters of what colours and tones correspond (everyon has a different idea of what blue sounds like)

That to me would be the ultimate - VR controllers with live would be a great start. Is there anything like this out there? I hear metasynth is heading in the colour/sound direction (but I dont have a mac so i haven't tried it) But some kind of VR type controlle would be wicked for live, and it would look wicked on stage as well! Maybe in the future we'll have 3d surround clubs with projectors that display what the performer is doing - I reckon it's not far off! The G5 can take up to how many terrabytes?? when they exist....

This to me is what this thread is all about - the intuitivity of playing musc and what instruments are being used, this is why I love live 3 so much, because it's getting close to the sound sculpture thing.

And I guess the comment about melody was more about not being restricted to the 12 note western melody - but it can come down to your definition of melody too.
