(CMJ) Legendary jazz pianist Alice Coltrane died Friday of respiratory failure at a hospital in West Hills, California. She was 69. Born Alice McLeod, she studied classical and jazz piano early in her life, taking lessons from revolutionary Bud Powell along the way, before she met her most-famous husband, John Coltrane.

I never got to see her play, but my friend just saw her with her son Ravi Coltrane and said it was amazing.

An absolutely amazing player and WAY underrated. Much, much more experimental then her husband. She had more to do with free jazz and setting groundwork for places like the Knitting Factory, John Zorn, etc.
