Problems with take-over modes

So i have some questions about take-over. First of all does takeover only apply to controllers which support automapping? I'm using an edirol pcr-30 with manual mapping, and I'm getting some mixed results. It seems when I choose a takeover mode and select a channel, the controls on my control surface which I've mapped to live mixer controls wait to be taken over and behave as I imagine they should, and when I select another channel, it works as well. the problem is when I go back to the original channel, it doesn't work again, and simply snaps rapidly to the last midi value sent by the controller. So it seems to work once for each channel, and then quit working. Anyone else having an issue like this?
