copy clips from one song file to another?

hi,
i'm having problems copying any number of clips from one file to another by copying and pasting. i am almost positive that in pre-ableton 3 versions that i did this often. now, however, if i copy some clips and open a new song, there is no option to paste.
is there something i can change somewhere to do this?
