midi not workin most of the time

hey ho. shortly after starting to use ableton 6 i was mid concert and my midi in and out stopped working. next concert i tried using a friends soundcard, but still no joy. have tried fiddling with my macbook audio and midi prefs, but still no joy.
any ideas? sometimes i can get midi out from my mac, but never in, and sometimes not out either.
