That's until you say "hey, I want to be a musician, let's buy some gear"

Anyway

South of the border, down Mexico way,
That's where I fell in love
When the stars above came out to play.
And now as I wander, my thoughts ever stray
South of the border, down Mexico way.

It depends ...

1. Do you want a sampler with own step sequencer in the roland "TR" style?
My suggestion: -> Fruity Loops

2. Do you want a sampler without a step sequencer?
My suggestion: -> Native Instruments Battery 2 or 3

I haven't had the chance to check the Ableton's "sampler" yet so you might want to try it, too.

Battery? Kind of uber-Impulse and comes with an amazing drum library too. Or Reaktor-been recently rekindling my love affair with some of the drum machines/samplers, R5 is such a steal for the $$ and you don't have to get into programming if you can't/won't.

I think reaktor sucks for samplers, personally. Actually, the whole file-loading scheme in Reaktor has stayed about the same since Generator : Crap. YMMV, of course.

I've got to vote for trying sampler in Live.
I use it almost exclusively now. does miss some of the more complex shaping tools other drum samplers like battery or kontakt have, but it's super stable in live, uses very little cpu, allows you to layer samples like crazy, either using racks or the mapping feature, or even other live tracks and midi routing. It also reads kontakt, akai, the logic EXwhatever the format is, into itself, allowing you to use some bitchin drumsets you may already own if you use kontakt say. I really just like it for stability and low cpu. Plus you can try it for free and see what you think. Oh yeah and it rocks as a multisample tool as well, obviously :D

Cory, how do you deal with the fact that you can't to multiple outs, an essential component when doing drums?

He uses racks. Because each chain has post/pre/master outputs.
