just bought a new seagate 500gb drive to move into my wiebetech toughtech FW 800 enclosure, which currently holds a western digital 200gb. i want to put the old 200gb drive into a new enclosure and use it for storage/backup. any recommendations for the new enclosure?

ICY BOX, they come in different connex versions incl. duo connex and have an oxford chip set [important for FW] are alloy / sturdy and no fan.

Why is it good to have no fan? I thought it was better to have fans...

Every hard drive should have a fan blowing across it; however FAN = WHITE NOISE. The noise put off by a computer makes it hard to really hear your mix, so I can see why you wouldn't want a fan.
A better solution is a water-cooled system or something like the AcoustiRACK or a KK Audio QR12 Quiet Rack. I'm not posting links as I don't want folks to think I'm pimping merch.

Good point, you should at least wait for your 10th post before pimpin'.

why do you use an FW800 connection? those enclosures are a marketing trick because if i remember correctly, the IDE connection is much slower than FW400, let alone FW800. But do please correct me if im wrong

because of noise, and enclosures of the quality and design like the ICY BOX will prevent any heat problems regarding the drive without the need of a noisy fan.

I recommend the enclosures at
www.macsales.com - OWC (oneWorldComputing) is a mac specialist company (although their products work with all computers) who make very high quality enclosures that just work "right" - I have not had noise problems or any other issues using their products like I have had with some genric enclosures....

Best quality USB/Firewire enclosures on the market. And yes, having a fan is better.

i wanted to go cheap, but after first getting confused over the rebranding, then reading bone-chilling reviews on retailer sites and tech forums about various sub-$50 enclosures cooking hard drives, destroying marriages, and giving people the AIDS, i decided to get a wiebetech toughtech 400 for $75. I've been traveling all over with a toughtech 800 for the past 2 years, and it's performed flawlessly. i hated to spend the extra 50 bucks, but it's a bargain compared losing 200 gigs of data
some rebranding examples:
onnto = weibetech toughtech = coolgear FW
raidsonic icy box = galaxy metal gear box = ppa metal gear box
