... Mac OS X is a Unix Version Build... So why not extened the courtesy to Linux Users by making a Native Build. Some people just like Linux's Power and Stability over Win and Mac; Why leave out these people that do make up a large portion of users. [Running and Using Linux Here!]

My guess: the cost is not justifiable

It's not like they can just go and build it for Linux.

imagine an ableton approved and signed laptop running ubuntu and Live for Linux, with knobs and faders and xfader and another xypad al on the machine chassis.. the last dj temptation among other desires... and being naturally pc architecture, you could install any other os (theoretically)

Like I said... the archettecture behind OS X is Unix and making a Build for Linux wouldn't require much; If anything, Nothing.

However, I'd undersatnd if it's not Open Source.

But it's not just rebuilding. What about tech support? compatibility?

This just isn't true. OS X involves a BSD subsystem underlying many aspects of the OS, but for every single place that really counts for an app like Live it is completely different than linux. OS X uses a mach microkernel, and therefore a completely different kind of driver system than linux. So the interactions with the realtime system (to the extent that linux even allows realtime without having to recompile the kernel, I'm not up on what the current state is), the audio drivers, and the midi drivers (I don't even have a clue how midi drivers work on linux, but I'm certain it's nothing like OS X) would have to be rewritten. I'd guess that OS X handles multiprocessor support in a way fairly different from linux as well. Further, the OS X GUI is from nextstep, which was a unix as well, but it is a very idiosyncratic (and great, don't get me wrong) system. Linux does have openstep but as far as I can tell the gap between OS X and openstep is years of work and growing. This may not matter so much because Live uses its own cross-platform GUI anyways, but it's going to matter some, I'm sure. Perhaps the most important problem, though, is that OS X is about the most standardized OS there is (talking about kernel, drivers, and libraries), and linux is about the least. Supporting a commercial app on linux is going to be a support nightmare, even if you have very rigid requirements as to distribution and so on.

Because now, many audio card are Linux Driver...and because linux is better Windows no ?

same. for me, if they went and made a linux version, i would take it without the support and let the linux users themselfes provide the support. thats better then nothing.

but as stated so many times before, running live in linux is nothing more then a dream. if you truly want it i guess the option would be to sit down with the linux community and Wine and get it to run through wine, otherwise i think were just screwed. id sit down with wine (apparently l7 works with wine, everything except the audio engine. not sure why youd want an audio program without an audio engine, but atleast thats better then the not working versions heh) but i cant really say that i could bring much to the table, seeing how i dont know linux well enough and my programming skills is less then ok heh.
