Hi, here's the scenario

I have my decks connected to an M Audio 44 breakout box which I run into Ableton Live Lite 5, no worries.

I want to control the MIDI sound files in Ableton with an midi keyboard rather than using the computer keys. So.. I have my old Casio CPS300 electric piano hooked up to my PC with a USB/Midi interface all drivers appear to be installed correctly ..

Midi out on keybard is connected to midi in jack on interface lead and midi in on keyboard is connected to midi out jack on interface lead...

but I cannot get Ableton to recognise the keyboard to allow me to play sounds ....

What am I doing wrong

Are you trying to trigger a virtual instrument, or trying to assign loops from the session view to the keyboard keys?
If it's the instrument, make sure that monitor is set to "IN"

If you're trying to assign loops and sounds from session view to the keys, hit CTRL-M (CMD-M on the Mac), select the clip and hit the key you want to assign it to.

Also, make sure you've selected your MIDI interface in Ableton's MIDI preferences.

thanks Mcconcaghy ... the MIDI interface does not even show in Preferences in Ableton ...... am I missing a trick or should it show as an option as soon as I connect the cable? The PC confirms new hardware is available to use but Ableton does not see it ??

Have all your gear hooked up and turned on before you launch Live, while your OS may be able to add new devices at any given moment, your running software usually can't.

Still no joy .... am I missing something ..could it be that even though the keyboard has MIDI In/Out that it is not a MIDI controller ..or should any keyboard with MIDI in/out connected to a USB/Midi Interface be picked up by Ableton... what the f**k is going on ,,,, it's propably me but I'm getting cheesed off now ... anyone got any other suggestions

I don't want to say that it is impossible, but I remember having the same problem about a couple of year ago with a midiman 2x2 usb/midi interface. I wasted a weekend whit this piece of crap. Ableton would not recognize it ever. The way I got around it is by ditching the midiman and using my soudblaster card midi port. I posted a link to a picture of the cable I had to go out and buy. The keyboard is definitely not your problem.

options->preferences->midi check the port settings. open Live's help box in the lower left and hover the mouse over the TRACK, SYNC and REMOTE boxes to read that they do. Only enable as few as you need, they take effect in real time as you turn them on/off, so there's no need to keep opening and closing that box while tweaking your setup. You have to reset these if your interface device is turned off when you launch Live.

All, this is still vexing me .. Tonedeft, hovering mouse over Track and Remote boxes just tells me how to activate a connected device .. problem is still that the program is not recognising that I have a device connected.

I have ditched the M Audio Uno usb/MIDI interface lead and I now have a M Audio Oxygen 8v.2 MIDI controller ...same problem it;s not being recognised as being connected.

Any other ideas anyone .... I've gotta be doing something basically stupid

What MIDI interface are you using? Have you checked if you have the latest drivers for it?

Is it safe to assume that you checked the drop-down under Control Surfaces? Can you at least see it in the input/output drop-downs? If you can't then the OS might know it's connected but might not have loaded the drivers properly.

Make sure you put it in MIDI Learn mode also...

is it connected and powered on when you start Live?

get a program like midi ox or c6 by elektron that can monitor midi activity. close live, fire one of those up and see if your computer sees midi activity.

it was drivers ... the M Audio site lists 2 drivers for Oxy 8, the one the Ableton support guy pointed me to was the wrong one or maybe i needed both, anyway installed the other one and bingo .. things are cooking!
