I played around with Operator for the first time last night and was actually impressed with the sound. I'm not used to the FM programming at all though. That will take some time to get used to. But before I buy it I was wondering what the general opinion of the synth is?

I type in Operator and it comes up with nothing but non-related posts. I think this is because people put "Operator" in there signature. You try it!

click on the "search for all terms" and then put in "operator opinions"
really, we're not dicks, but you should try to help yourself first, especially on this very very old and overly discussed topic...

+1
i would basically tell you that i like it, but for more constructive discussions, you should try to find some old threads.
then maybe come with more specific questions.
good luck!

did that and went all the way to page 7 and still found nothing specifically focused on Operator's sound and usability.

ok, I apologize. I didn't pick the "search for all terms" button. It should default to that positon. most other search engines are by default "search for all terms", like google, yahoo etc.

After having had Operator for a good while, I think its overpriced. Its neat and easy to use, and integrates beautifully, but I get so much more use out of VSTi's that cost just a little more.

operator is surely overpriced - but I think it is great - especially for loops and percussive sounds.
Abletons product policy however is quite doubtful though ..... If you invest in it be aware that you always need to buy the newest Live version to get the current version of Operator - which is pretty unreasonable - that making it really more than overpriced .....
best
