OSX 10.4.9 is now out.
There were people having a few audio issues with the firewire subsystem in 10.4.8. Maybe these will be addressed by this update.

Robin-
Do you know anything about a release date for 10.5?

nobody will know anything about the release date until it is announced. Speculating wont make it come any sooner.

Shouldn't be too long now. I'm hoping there will be a lot more in it than they've announced on thier website. Thing with Apple though, they've never failed to disappoint thus far so I'm relatively optomistic.

the 10.4.9 update does not seem to be in any way audio related...
i was expecting it as i only got my audiofire working ok after installing a developer firewire driver that slows my boot time and was expecting 10.4.9 to speed it up again
it did not happen,
and after inspecting documentation nothing regarding audio popped out...
about 10.5 i noticed this on macupdate:
Pre-order Mac OS X 10.5 "Leopard" from Amazon.com. It's shipping at the end of this month (March). Amazon usually ships it to arrive faster than if you buy from the Apple Store. Get it faster!
and this on macrumors:
According to multiple anonymous sources, Apple's next installment of Mac OS X (named Leopard) will arrive in mid to late April with an exact shipping date being announced later this month, perhaps alongside Adobe's Creative Suite 3 event.
While the sources are anonymous and cannot be confirmed at this time by other known and traditionally reliable means, agreement from such a variety of sources is rare. Still, Leopard's release has been prone to much hype and speculation, and we hesitate to place too much hope in such rumors (yet).
The latest seed of Leopard, released to developers March 2nd, showed progress but still had many serious bugs waiting to be exterminated.

how will leapard be with PPC? a developer friend who is using 10.5 at work says its totally opyimized for intel mac (naturally, i guess), but ive also read on mac rumours etc that it will be fine with G4, and even usable with G3 models.
anyone have something definitive on this?

OSX 10.5 will be universial binary, so yes it will work on PCC architecture. Furthermore, apparently it will increase performance for both PCC and intel Macs.

What trouble are you having with your usb ports?

well, i upgraded. was worried after i heard about a max/msp incompatibility. but then read about a remedy for that. so i went for it.
good news: max/msp works just fine.
bad news: audiofire2 doesn't work at all.
well, that's not entirely true. it will echo incoming audio to the outputs, but won't allow any software to interface to/from it.
pretty cool...what a hunk of shit.

my audiofire 4 is working perfectly on 10.4.9
some days after the update i even got my usual fast boot back !!!
(after installing an apple dev firewire driver to solve some issues i had with my audiofire my boot time was taking 1 or 2 minutes instead of the usual 20 secs...)
guatamaham : have you tried to repair disk permissions and such ?
you say you can´t select you audiofire on any software ?
how about the console, does it work ? do you have the latest version ?

actually, about twenty minutes after i posted my previous one, it started working again. i power cycled it (unplugged the AC) while it was unplugged from the machine, plugged it back in and it works fine now. at least, for now (i've had this problem happen even before the 10.4.9 upgrade)... so i better work while i can, right?
i'm trying to verify disc permissions now (didn't even think of it). yea, i have the latest firmware and the console. console ran just fine, it just wasn't allowing other software to interface to it for some reason. i could see audio input/output and everything, but if i tried to use that input in software i couldn't and i couldn't send audio from software to the card. weird.
