Hi,
when djing with ableton.How do you match the beats up i.e pitch shift? Is the only way to do it by increasing/decreasing the track delay.If this is the case -its pretty shitty..What are some decent contollers for dj applications then?

Check the manual or the message board on "How to warp a track" ... You may find the answer there if not then don't get rid of your Tech 12's...

It's all in the warp. When you import your music into Live, your tracks will be analysed and warp markers will be set on the music to sync it to the 'Set' tempo, although they might need a bit of tweaking, but it's a piece of piss to sort them out. You can then use the crossfader to mix the clips.

If you need to pitchshift, use Transpose, although you shouldn't need it to match beats.

I think the point is that you don't have to pitch shift if you're warping your tracks properly.

Maybe i"ll need to chat with tarekith..I still havent been able to get my head around the set tempo and the tempo in the clip envelope and why a track maybe 125 in the clip envelope,but if the set tempo up the top is 130,the track plays at 130???? this means if you are djing you will constantly have to adjust this...correct??? otherwise the track wont be playing at its original speed..

sorry about the stupid questions..i cant get my head around certain aspects of this program.

It's playing at 130bpm because of the warping, if you want your track to play at the original speed without warping, you can switch warping off in the sample box

The is no pitch shift in Live.

To change the tempo warp the track and set the global bpm to the desired tempo.

To change the pitch use the transpose knob.

Live is a radically different paradigm from djing. Deckadance, serato etc are more traditional dj tools.

Thanks for the advice pulsoc..I dont know if its just me but i thought ableton would be more user friendly for djing..Having to deal with warping seems to create a whole new set of problems as opposed to making it easier..and using the transpose isnt the same as using pitch shift on a cd deck..i dont know,i"ll soldier on i guess.

You may want to look at some of the traditional dj type softs, like those I mentioned and some others. Also check out http://www.abletonlivedj.com they have tutorials and forums. Ableton does have a learning curve and many differences from traditional djing but is a cool tool.

yeah, warping is a pain in the butt - even though I have it down to about 30 to 45 seconds it's still a b i t c h

WHEN

you could just load a track up in Serato or Torq and be off in about half that time - not to mention you can do some proper looping in Torq and utilize the sampler

NOW

You can't use dope vsti's like MicroTonic, IMpulse etc in Torq and you're limited to 2 decks - Ableton is dope for uber computer type hybrid performance / dj stuff - way more tracks, effects, other vsti's <--- it's awesome

but for straight dj stuff go with what Pulsoc said, easy

Although I think Deckadance from IMageline will have all these options when it comes out of Beta - I think Sweetjesus was playing around with it recently, it is still in Beta I think

A guy over on the torq-dj forum replaced his djm 600 or 800 for a x-session pro

I know that sounds dumb but after getting my effects mapped to my controller I'm like "uh, you'll never need a mixer with effects again!"
