Samsung Announces 64 GB Solid State Drive

Okay so its not big but look at those read/write times
"the 64 GB unit can read 64 MB/S, write 45 MB/s, and consumes just half a Watt when operating (one tenth of a Watt when idle). In comparison, an 80 GB 1.8-inch hard drive reads at 15 MB/s, writes at 7 MB/s, and eats 1.5 Watts either operating or when idle."
It'll be pricey too but these things soon come down. Remember when DVD writers were new?...
Bye bye audio glitches forever?

Yeah, computing is just in its infancy. I mean, I just made the jump to a Macbook from a P4 3.2Ghz, and it's like night and day.D K wrote:one o those and a touchscreen on a laptop. please.
Now with solid state drives becoming bigger and bigger, processors reaching to 45 nm, touchscreen stuff finally becoming more available.
The future is going to be extraordinarily interesting, and our kids are going to say,"
YOU had a LAPTOP?" What was that, the stoneages?
Macbook c2d 2.0, 2G RAM, 160G HD 5400 RPM, OSX(10.5.5), XP Home, LIVE6, BCR 2000, UC33e, Yamaha P-200, Logic Studio, KRK V6 II
One of those in one of the Modbooks (http://www.axiotron.com/) might be pretty neat. Perhaps a bit premature.
That's awesome. I wonder what they'll do in a RAID 0 array. No seriously, is there an HD controller/bus that will even keep up with these drives?
Anyway I've said it before and it's looking like the truth - I'll probably never buy another traditional HDD - my next PC will probably be all solid-state components. I don't even really think the size is an issue. I went with a pair of 74G Raptors - relatively small - to optimize for speed in my last build, and never worry about space. You can always back stuff off to a cheap external drive if the need arises.
