What kind of audio card do you have: internal or external? Which microphone are you using, built-in or some mic attached to your audio card? Where is your audio coming out: to headphones or speakers?

thanks for reply, trying to record either mp3's or from cd's, no mic and just the audio card that comes with the HP laptop. As soon as i arm it, the noise is there, i have gone through preferences and set as per the instructions.

I have also downloaded ASIO driver in the hope will sort but all it did was stop my real player or windows media player from playing any mp3's so had to do a system restore.

When you activate rec in Live, the software monitoring is activated by default. This means everything that comes in to the channel is output to your soundcard.

I'm not sure if this is what you mean by feedback, but there are these three buttons on each track: In, Auto and Off. Auto is usually selected. In means everything that comes to the track from an input gets played to soundcard. Auto means the same, but only when the rec is armed. Off means input signal won't be sent to audio card. In this case, you should select Off.

I still didn't quite understand what you're trying to do.. you have some external player that you hook up to your laptop and try to record the signal?

Anyway, try putting it to Off. When you arm it, what might also be happening, that the input signal from your computers internal microphone get's output to your laptop speakers and therefore causes feedback.

Turn Monitor Off.

Also, did you know you don't have to record mp3-files, you can drag them to Live directly.

thanks for your help, treid that but when i play back recording its still a constant hum in the back ground.

i thought that i could record a sample rather than drag and drop it so i would have more controls to play with the sound, i now know i was not thinking straight,

with a sample, how can i change its key etc put reverb on it eq i tto strip the bass out or reveres it etc.....

Being stoopid i know!
